| Casa di Fiori is a delightful town house with large garden just inside the walls of the ancient city of Citta’ di Castello. | | | Citta di Castello is in Umbria, close to the Tuscan border in the centre of the Tiber valley and rich in medieval and Renaissance monuments.
Umbria is known as the “Green Heart of Italy” for its unspoiled beauty and lack of tourists.
The house is an excellent base for visiting well-known places such as Assisi, Perugia, Cortona, Siena and many lesser- known beautiful hilltop towns. A few minutes drive from the house puts you in the midst of the classic Italian countryside, yet you enjoy the convenience and lively atmosphere of living in town with parking just outside the house.
The Accommodation
The house has been recently restored, has two double bedrooms, both with en-suite shower rooms. There is a warm sitting/dining room; a bright, cosy kitchen; glorious outdoor dining terrace just off the kitchen, and an elevated terrace leading to a beautiful garden where guests can watch a lively game of bocce played daily by the men in the neighbourhood.
Outdoors
The garden level has a mature plum tree with a shaded sitting patio beneath that is just right for enjoying an afternoon with a good book or an al fresca lunch. 3-5 day cooking school available at highly-rated, trattoria owned by English speaking husband and wife. Trattoria located 4 minute walk from Casa di Fiori. Request contact number for information.
The Local Area
For art lovers the region is rich in examples of the work of Piero della Francesca, Raphael, Signorelli, and countless others. Citta’ di Castello has an active social scene with many cultural festivals each year such as the National Chamber Music Festival (Aug.), National Horse Show (Sept.), Fair of Period Furniture (Sept.), and Truffle Festival (Nov.)
Guests can stroll through the narrow, medieval streets to the bustling outdoor market to buy fresh, local fruit and vegetables or sample the many varieties of sausage and cheese. The specialty of the region, “porchetta,” freshly roasted pork stuffed with fennel and garlic is a must for all non-vegetarians!
There are restaurants from simple pizzerias to those specializing in more sophisticated international cuisine with within a very short walking distance. Or you can simply sit in the Piazza Matteotti with a café latte or glass of wine and watch the living theatre of Italian life pass by! A couple of miles from the house, at Terme Fontecchio, is a natural hot spring spa. This is open daily and has a great restaurant as well. A large public swimming pool is less than a mile from the house but this is open in the summer only. | | | |
